Eleven more candles… East Church's sanctuary was decorated with balloons. We were prepared for the joy of a baptism and a fun activity with stuffed animals at our October 28 worship service. That all happened. But before the joy came grieving. During the time of the customary Opening Prayer, Pastor Shelly quietly lit a taper from one of the candles on our altar and used that to light eleven candles. Eleven small lights representing and acknowledging the eleven killed in a Pittsburgh synagogue the day before. The candles remained burning throughout the rest of the worship service. As a background. As a context. As a testament.
