Maundy Thursday is our most solemn worship service of the Lenten experience. It's the dark valley between the exuberance of Palm Sunday and the astonishing triumph of Easter Sunday. During the Tenebrae service we re-tell the narrative of Jesus' betrayal, trial, and execution. We remember and personally identify with the disciples' confusion and consternation. As we listen to scripture readings and sing hymns, the sanctuary lighting is gradually darkened. At the conclusion of the service, Pastor Shelly draped the Altar cross in black and extinguished the Christ Candle. Then we in the congregation together stripped the church's chancel and sanctuary of all ornaments. Finally the Christ Candle was re-lit, glowing resolutely in the dark and austere sanctuary as we left in silence.
