Sunday, June 21 was the first "summer Sunday" of the year. One of the features of summer worship is the Beth-el table, placed at the top of the stairs in the middle of the chancel. Beth-el means "place of God" and the table is a place where a parishioner may offer a token (and perhaps a short message) of some encounter with the holy he or she had during the week or on a vacation. On this Sunday, however, nine lit candles joined the collection of stones and sea shells. Each candle represented one of the victims of the shooting which took place in Charleston, S.C. at the Emanuel AME Church earlier that week. Those in the congregation this morning were invited to come to the Beth-el table, not to tell of his or her own encounter with the holy, but instead to place a small token next to each candle.
