Growing in the Spirit
Our Vision states that “…we will grow in the Spirit…” To that end, we offer a variety of opportunities for adult spiritual formation that range from Bible studies to small group ministries. Some meet on an ongoing basis. Others meet as interest and need arise.
Sunday Sermon Bible Study
This class studies and discusses the text upon which the sermon is based for that Sunday. The texts are usually based on the lectionary readings. Commentaries are e-mailed in advance for all participants. The group is open to everyone and meets Sunday mornings at 8:30.
Bible Basics
This is a six week introduction to the Bible using the study guide developed by the Kerygma Bible Study program. It meets once a year and is scheduled as needed.
Discovering the Bible
A 30-session course that introduces the Bible, looking at the development of themes and theology. This course is scheduled based on interest.
Sermon Feedback
From time to time we gather after worship to talk about the sermon. These feedback sessions tend to happen when the topic may be “provocative,” though that is not a hard and fast guideline. Participants meet from 11:30-12:30. Childcare is provided.
“Lord I Want to Be A Christian”
The title of the old hymn, Lord I Want to Be A Christian, says it all. Using Matthew’s “Sermon on the Mount” as a guideline, this four session course uses Jesus’ comments on what it means to be his follower. This can be great for newcomers but open to anyone and is scheduled as needed.
Book and Discussion Series
Several book studies happen each year on a variety of topics. They generally meet on Monday evenings at 7:30 pm. Check the newsletter for current topics.
Women’s Society
This is a long standing women’s group that seeks to create opportunities for informational and spiritual fellowship among the women of the church. The Women’s Society meets monthly from October to May.
Retreats
East Church Retreats happen on an occasional basis. Watch the newsletter for details.
Small Group Ministries
These groups provide places for individuals to deepen their faith and use their gifts in service to the church. The population and demographic of any Church can change over time. These small groups are similarly fluid and are typically assembled to respond to a current need or interest in the East Church community. Small Group Ministries at East Church might include some or all of the following:
- - Seriously Seeking Something
-
Seinfeld was once described as “the show about nothing.” This group might be described as the group about nothing, in that it has no agenda or set format. Those are determined by the participants. The group opens up in September to new members. Once formed, these groups are closed so that trust develops and honest conversation is possible. Topics range widely, but the focus is on creating a place where participants can support one another on their spiritual paths, exploring their faith in on-going discussion and readings.
- - Healing Prayer Ministry
- This is a small group that meets on the first Monday of each month for an intimate service of prayer and the laying on of hands. Members also assist in a yearly healing service for the congregation and may visit those who are sick.
- - Newcomers’ Groups
- These groups form as needed as a way of welcoming new people to the church, providing a place for them to ask questions and getting to know each other better. They help newcomers form the bonds of a new community within the larger community. They usually meet once a month, with the time being determined by the group.
