What do we consider “Stewardship”?
Stewardship Committee collects promises
In 1620 the Rev. John Robinson told the Pilgrims setting out for the New World, “The Lord hath more truth and light yet to break forth from His holy Word.”
In the United Church of Christ we still believe in God’s continuing revelation, and say God is Still Speaking. We are a seekers’ church, with new, fresh thinking grounded in our ancient faith. Our worship includes questions and explorations. Our worship includes everyone eager to discern the voice of the still speaking God.
The term Stewardship is too often narrowly thought to be limited to the financial aspects of a church’s operation. East Congregational Church makes a conscious effort to view Stewardship more broadly. We see Stewardship as an expression of our faith: a Faith Foundation comprising Time, Talent and yes Treasure too, asking for and making use of all of our resources to further the church’s mission and charge. Every year our members promise to support the work of God:
- By growing in faith through church attendance and daily prayer
- By offering time and talent to the teams and committees of East Church
- By financial gifts for church support
- With our Benevolence offering, given to programs doing the work of God outside our doors including the UCC Wider Church Mission and programs of special interest to East Church.
- By paying annual membership dues to the UCC
Our Church Support pledges and Benevolence giving have increased substantially over the past few years. Our current members meet the majority of our church’s expenses. These offerings
- Provide for the care of God’s house
- Spread the gospel of God’s love and forgiveness
- Teach the principles and love of our Savior to our youth
- Provide fellowship and inspiration for all who attend our church.
God is still speaking, showing ways to fulfillment different from those portrayed by our society. “Take hold of the Life that really is life… Be generous.” (1 Timothy 6:18-19).
